Hobbits beat out princess power at the weekend box office, as Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug debuts at #1.
The second film in the Hobbit trilogy opened with an impressive $73.7 million, pushing last weekend's top film Frozen to #2. In the film, the dwarves -- along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey -- continue their quest to reclaim Erebor, their homeland, from Smaug.
Despite its first place position, Hobbit fell short of what the prequel's debut, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, when it opened this same weekend last year with $84.6 million.
Disney's Frozen lands at #2 with $22.1 million, bringing its domestic haul to $164.3 million.
The holiday-themed Tyler Perry's a Madea Christmas opened at #3 with $16.2 million. Experts say the weather effected the film's performance at the box office.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, bringing it domestic total to $356.9 million and worldwide total of $739.9 million. That surpasses the worldwide box office total for the original, which brought in $691 million.
Closing out the top 5 is Thor: The Dark World, earning $2.7 million.
