The Hunger Games series of books and movies is nothing more than dystopian science fiction that has nothing to do with the reality of 21st century America, right? Well, as The Daily Show’s Jessica Williams discovered when she investigated the massive budget cuts to the SNAP food stamp program, a world in which people starve in the districts as the elite watch from The Capitol may not be so far-fetched after all.
Williams interviews Forbes columnist John Tamny, who has proposed abolishing SNAP altogether. He explained that he would prefer a world in which private charity chipped in where the government does now, something he said would be fueled by the media coverage of poor people “literally starving” across the country, “distended bellies” and all.
“So, the media would help by taking cameras, going out, filming poor people that are starving and then broadcasting them on national TV?” Williams clarified, before realizing he was talking about The Hunger Games. There was only one thing left to do: Find some hungry “tributes” who could destroy each other for our amusement over one measly juice box.
