'Catching Fire' Blazes Over $700M Worldwide Box Office Mark

Last week we let you know that The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was just on the verge of surpassing the final worldwide totals of The Hunger Games in just 17 days. Well, with one more weekend under its belt, not only has the movie already made more than the first movie ever did, but it has also sailed past the $700M worldwide box office earnings mark with an estimated total of $729,882,000.

Once again it’s the international box office that’s giving it the biggest push, adding $36.2M to their totals from last week and pushing a 51-49% split with the domestic box office. The current international total of $372.9M is already 30% higher than the amount the first movie made in foreign markets through its entire run. The movie is also expected to open in Japan in two weeks (December 27th), which should give these numbers an extra boost.

In the United States, the film made $13.5M over the course of the weekend, bringing its domestic total to $356,982,000. The decrease is largely attributed to the fact that The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opened on Friday. Although US totals appear to be decreasing faster than they did for the first movie, experts still think it’s possible for it to make it past the $400M domestic box office mark by the end of its run.

The current domestic total puts Catching Fire as the third highest-grossing movie of the year, only about $10M below Despicable Me 2 (which should be easily achievable), and as no. 25 on the list of highest-grossing movies of all time. As far as worldwide totals go, the movie remains as the fifth highest-grossing of the year, about $13.6 million below Monsters University (definitely achievable), and as no. 56 on the all-time list.

What do you think of these numbers? Will you be watching the movie again during the holiday break? Be sure to let us know in a comment!
