I can imagine Robert Plant watching the Shakes perform this early Zeppelin classic with a mix of jealousy, pride and slack-jawed awe. Brittany Howard performs with all of the ferocity of Howlin’ Wolf combined with the Soul Mama presence of Aretha Franklin (before she was doing Snickers commercials and dressing like one of the wealthy elites from The Hunger Games). A better comparison yet might be Tina Turner who, despite bland forays into 80’s style pop-rock has always performed with the electrifying intensity and conviction Howard displays here. Obviously the rest of the band lack the open-shirted rock-god presence of Zeppelin or any of the other heavy-hitters mentioned here but they do create a thunderous noise that Brittany rides like a wave crashing over the presumably sweaty and tightly-packed audience. She and the rest of the band swing the hammer of the gods mightily.
