HICKORY, N.C. — If you’ve ever wondered about author Suzanne Collins’ inspiration for her best-selling “Hunger Games” novels and the blockbuster films they’ve inspired, this is your chance to find out more, and for free.
Amy H. Sturgis of Lenoir-Rhyne University is presenting a week-long program, through a series of interactive lectures and videos online that will explore the meaning of and inspiration behind “The Hunger Games.” It’s called “On Tyrants Tributes: Real World Lessons from The Hunger Games.”
The series is offered through George Mason University’s Learn Liberty Academy. The program starts on Dec. 16 and wraps up with a live, webcam-hosted presentation at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, when Sturgis will deliver a lecture entitled, “The Hunger Games and the Dystopian Tradition.” Following her lecture, Sturgis will host a conversation with special guest Cheralyn Lambeth, who worked on costume design for “The Hunger Games” film.
During this week you’ll learn how Collins drew inspiration from Greek mythology and Roman history when writing “The Hunger Games” trilogy. Then, you’ll discuss how these age-old themes remain relevant to the issues of today, including government surveillance, media sensationalism, and militarization of the police.
