The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Review | AITE Edge

The odds were definitely not in Katniss’ favor when she was thrust into the Hunger Games the first time around, and her bad luck continued into the second movie. The adaptation to the second novel for the Hunger Games Trilogy was able to open up new themes for the actors to portray. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, directed by Francis Lawrence, is definitely a must see movie.

“I think the movie stayed pretty true to the book,” said one anonymous viewer. “The one thing that wasn’t completely accurate was that the actors looked older than how I imagined them in the book, but this didn’t take away from my enjoyment.”

While I do agree with the viewer on the ages, I still cannot imagine any other actors or actresses portraying the Hunger Games protagonists. I was thoroughly impressed with the acting of Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss Everdeen) and her co-stars, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth (Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne, respectively). The trio were able to show their true acting potential by playing some of the most heartfelt moments that Suzanne Collins, author of the trilogy, wrote into Catching Fire.

Hemsworth’s character, Gale, was given a larger role to play this time than in the first movie. He even had to act out a scene where his character was being continuously whipped as punishment for hunting illegally. This scene gave his character much more depth and showed just how passionate his character really was. Not only that, but this scene was vital to Katniss and Gale’s relationship and the acting portrayed by Hemsworth was truly spectacular.

Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence were given more scenes together and their natural chemistry definitely showed. The two “puppies” – as they would describe themselves – were able to show, perfectly, the development of their character’s friendship despite how their relationship originally started out fake. The two worked so well together that Josh Hutcherson even admitted to Ryan Seacrest that he had felt “natural stirrings” while filming the romantic moments.

Like with movie adaptations, Francis Lawrence had to cut or alter some parts out in order to add in some new and essential scenes. Despite this, the movie was able to stay true to the novels and what they represent; the story of a strong woman becoming an inspiration for a rebellion and learning that sometimes it’s better to fight against the real enemy, despite how difficult it can become, was translated onto the movie screen very well.

The cast and crew for this movie did an amazing job and they were able to give their audience some real movie magic. I highly recommend watching this movie as soon as you can, especially those who were fans of the book series.
