Kanye West's clothing line "Yeezy" makes a dramatic appearance at NYFW.
Kanye West premiered his autumn/winter collection titled Yeezy Season 2. It is following his first collection Yeezy Season 1 shown in February that was in collaboration with Adidas. Both of these collections are a part of West’s clothing line Yeezy, and have gathered a lot of attention.
Parkas, bodysuits, leggings, and hoodies in pale tans, beiges, and caramels hit the runway in this collection. Heavy-duty boots and the Yeezy Boost 350 shoe in collaboration with Adidas were seen stomping the runway. Grungy layers and drapes alongside bold formfitting outfits were seen. It all had a very urban element to it and could easily be picked out on the city streets.
The entire collection is very minimalist. Most outfits consisted of one color, creating a strong presence. This collection cohesively contrasts Season 1 by focusing on pale neutrals while the other was more focused on blacks, greens, and dark browns. Overall, the collection has many luxurious utility pieces that are dystopian and militaristic, and has gained mixed success among the fashion industry.
Some have criticized Wests’ collections as a joke to the fashion industry. Some are calling it genius, and praising West’s collaboration with Adidas. Rapper Ice-T called it, “future slave wear” in a tweet. Several people are calling it “expensive homeless gear,” or “Hunger Games chic” since many pieces are so minimal and grungy.
Many are calling West a “Fashion Week antihero,” but West isn’t going to let the haters deter him as the collection will eventually be available in stores.
In the audience, big names such as Anna Wintour, Lorde, Drake, and Kim Kardashian with daughter North West attended to see West’s second collection. Many other big artists from the entertainment business were present at the collection.
The show was a late addition to the schedule at New York Fashion Week. This caused controversy and last minute scrambling at one of the largest international fashion events.
