QUICK HIT – Divergent is a dystopian YA fiction that follows in the footsteps of Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games. I had trouble putting it down. One of the best books I have read in a long time.
Divergent is the story of Beatrice Prior. She lives in dystopian Chicago where society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue: Candor, Abnegation (her faction with her family), Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. Every year, all sixteen-year olds must select a faction to join and devote their lives. A test helps them to determine where they should go, but Beatrice has a problem: her test results are inconclusive. She’s divergent . She doesn’t know what that means and is told not to talk to anyone about it. And now has to choose between staying with her family and being whom she really is. The choice she makes surprises everyone.
During the initiation that follows, she renames herself Tris and tries to determine who her friends are and where an unexpected romance might be leading. She notices conflict between the factions and a threat to unravel her seemingly perfect society. The fact that she is divergent might help her save the people she loves or it could end up destroying her.
Veronica Roth’s first novel is a smash. From the first page, I kept wondering what was going to happen and had to turn page after page to keep going. It is easy to relate to what Beatrice is going through. At some point or other we all have to face the choice of agreeing with our family or choosing something else. It may not always be on as large of a scale as it is for her, but it will happen. I enjoyed seeing her from someone who didn’t know a thing about how to defend herself to someone that everyone else was afraid of, even though she was probably the smallest in the room. Being small doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be taken seriously and she proves that.
The bottom line is if you like a non-stop action story with twist and turns you will love Divergent .
