With the deadline for teams to make trades and the new players be eligible for the playoffs approaching, The Orioles placed Darren O’Day on trade waivers. For those that don’t know, after the non-waiver trade deadline teams can still trade players by placing them on revocable trade waivers. The waiver period last 47 hours. If a team places a claim on a player three things can happen. The team can trade the player to the claiming team, take the player off waivers, or allow the claiming team to take the player.
If the player clears the waiver period the team can trade him anywhere.
It is unlikely that O’Day will make it through waivers unclaimed. At 32, O’Day is putting up career numbers, and has been a key part in the back end of the bullpen.
O’Day is in the last year of his contract and only has $882k left on his contract.
The Orioles currently sit at 63-64, but are only 2.5 games out of the wild card, and 8 games out of the AL East with about a month to play.
The Orioles may be more inclined to trade O’Day now with the rise of Mychal Givens who has been lights out since being recalled to the majors. Givens currently has a 1.26 era .558 whip and a 11.9 k/9 in 14.1 innings.
If the Orioles do deal O’Day they would be essentially giving up on the season. The bullpen already took a huge hit when Tommy Hunter was traded for Junior Lake, and without O’Day in the bullpen it would turn one of the best pens in the league to an average one.
