Most-Anticipated YA Movie Adaptations of 2014 | Novel Novice

most anticipated in 2014

Lots more movie adaptations of our favorite YA books are on the slate for release in 2014. Here’s a look at what’s coming soon to a theater near you:

they suck at schoolVampire Academy

Release date: February 14, 2014

Based on the first book in Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series, the movie stars Zoey Deutch as Rose Hathaway, best friend and sworn protector of vampire princess Lissa Dragomir (Lucy Fry). With the writers of Mean Girls behind the film adaptation, Vampire Academy appears to be focusing on an action-packed, snarky take on the story — veering away from the more angsty and emotional trope that teen vampire movies have been associated with.

Release date: March 21, 2014

Based on the best-selling young adult novel by Veronica Roth, Divergent hopes to tap into the audience that’s been making The Hunger Games series a major blockbuster for Summit Entertainment’s parent company, Lionsgate. Divergent is another YA dystopian saga, taking place in a futuristic Chicago where society is divided into “factions” based on specific personality traits. Divergent follows Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) as she breaks from her family’s faction, and discovers she may possess the skills to change her society forever.

Release date: June 6, 2014

Shailene Woodley also appears in this YA movie adaptation, this time in a realistic, contemporary story about two teenage cancer patients who meet in a support group and fall in love. The movie is based on John Green’s best-selling novel The Fault in Our Stars, which blends humor with the heart-breaking storyline. The humor appears to carry through in the film, as noted by the controversial and divisive tagline revealed just recently on the movie poster: “One sick love story.”

Giver, The official fbThe Giver

Release date: August 15, 2014

What really sets The Giver apart from other YA adaptations coming out in 2014 is that it’s not based on a recently released book. Lois Lowry’s novel has long been a classic amongst young readers, and has often been a staple in classrooms. The book follows 12-year-old Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), who lives in a perfect world, without pain and suffering. Jonas discovers much more about the “real” world, however, when he is chosen to be the “Receiver of Memories” and begins training with an old man called The Giver (Jeff Bridges).

maze_runner4The Maze Runner

Release date: September 19, 2014

More dystopian drama, this time from best-selling author James Dashner. The Maze Runner follows Thomas (Teen Wolf’s Dylan O’Brien), who wakes up in an elevator with no memory but his name. He finds himself among a group of teen boys, who have all survived in “The Glade” — a mysterious closed environment — for years. A new boy arrives every 30 days … until a girl shows up, and things start to change.

mockingjay fanmade posterThe Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1

Release date: November 21, 2014

If one thing is guaranteed about the movies being release in 2014, it’s this: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 is going to make a butt-load of money. The franchise has already secured itself as a solid investment for studio Lionsgate, what with Catching Fire becoming 2013′s #2 overall movie at the box office (second only to Iron Man 3). Mockingjay – Part 1 picks off right where Catching Fire left off, following Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) as she reluctantly joins the revolution against the Capitol.
